Denise was born and raised in her beloved Boston, Massachusetts and lives just south of the city. She got the writing bug early – at nine years old when she and a friend decided to each write a story for fun. Denise’s was about an old man in a graveyard and that sparked the beginning of her love for “spooky” stories. When she was in junior high school, she wrote a short story for English class called “The Strange Sound” about a brother and sister who meet with a gruesome fate after visiting their uncle’s old farmhouse. There were also other supernatural stories along the way – including an unpublished novel using the characters from the popular 1960’s soap opera Dark Shadows.
Denise is intrigued by true-life stories that are stranger than fiction and she loves a twist ending that she never saw coming. Besides ghosts and haunted houses, some of her other subjects of interest to write about are reincarnation, time travel, and historical drama. Mostly she’s a sucker for a great love story. She’s written a number of short stories and songs, as well as hundreds of poems, but writing novels and screenplays is her true passion. She is beyond thrilled to share it with her longtime writing partner, Betty Lynn Nye. While Denise has written stories on her own (with a host of ideas for others), it’s the collaboration with Betty that she believes turns her words into magic.
Denise has worked in marketing and advertising. She was a member of Harvard Square Scriptwriters, Women in Film, and The Cumberland Company for the Performing Arts. She studied screenwriting under Lawrence Konner (Sorcerer's Apprentice, Planet of the Apes, Boardwalk Empire). She has also taught screenwriting. She is excited about what’s on the horizon and looks forward to the many projects she wants to develop with Betty.
Born a New Englander but currently residing in Charlottesville, Virginia, Betty knew she wanted to be a writer from the time she composed a story, "The Last Man on Earth", in 6th grade - "While an astronaut is on a mission in outer space, the human race is annihilated by a nuclear war leaving him the last man on earth."
Betty's interests lie in the realms of the spirit, the supernatural, the haunting beauty of the New England coastline and history, i.e. Colonial America, the last stands of the Native Americans, ancient Egyptian and Biblical times, and historical England and Ireland. Adventures in writing and theater have taken her down many roads: newspaper and newsletter journalist, participant in The Cumberland Company for the Performing Arts in Rhode Island, teacher of theater to junior high school students, co-creator of Westport Community Theater in Massachusetts, and writer of many scripts, stories, songs, and poems. She studied screenwriting under Lawrence Konner (Sorcerer's Apprentice, Planet of the Apes, Boardwalk Empire).
The creative journey writing in partnership with Denise M. McShane for many years has given her unforgettable experiences: the excitement of being inspired by a new idea, the intrigue of searching for and serendipitously locating research, the joy of completing a project, and the thrills and anxieties of marketing. She looks forward to having many more exhilarating experiences writing novels and screenplays in partnership with Denise.
